Modern hip-hop and R&B music can both arguably be divided ÛÛ
ÛÛ into pre- and post-A Tribe Called Quest, and the musical ÛÛ
ÛÛ efforts of its lead MC and producer Kamaal Ibn John ÛÛ
ÛÛ Fareed--better known to the world as Q-Tip. Consider the ÛÛ
ÛÛ jazzy sampling, laid-back tempos and boho-chic vibe he ÛÛ
ÛÛ introduced, then mull over the bohemian posturing and ÛÛ
ÛÛ sounds of the neo-soul movement, plus any rap music that ÛÛ
ÛÛ shies away from hardcore posturing. All roads lead back to ÛÛ
ÛÛ ATCQ and the beats, rhymes and life of one man: Q-Tip. And ÛÛ
ÛÛ now the time is ripe for The Renaissance, the Abstract ÛÛ
ÛÛ MC's first solo album in nine years. ÛÛ
ÛÛ ÛÛ
ÛÛ Back when rap production was all about James Brown samples ÛÛ
ÛÛ and dense, agitated sonic collages, Q-Tip was digging ÛÛ
ÛÛ deeper into the record crates for snatches of stand-up ÛÛ
ÛÛ bass and obscure jazz. The influence of that first sonic ÛÛ
ÛÛ renaissance is still being heard. "I see the Tribe legacy ÛÛ
ÛÛ as one of the strongest in modern music," Q-Tip admits. ÛÛ
ÛÛ "From us came so many artists, like Common, Mos Def, Talib ÛÛ
ÛÛ Kweli, the Fugees and Kanye West. I feel very honored to ÛÛ
ÛÛ have been able to contribute in such a way that, 20 years ÛÛ
ÛÛ later, it still is a reference point." Produced primarily ÛÛ
ÛÛ by Q-Tip with plenty of live instrumentation and a love ÛÛ
ÛÛ fixation, The Renaissance is a stark portrait of the ÛÛ
ÛÛ artist as an elder statesman. One listen to the frenetic ÛÛ
ÛÛ drumming and strutting live bassline of a track like ÛÛ
ÛÛ "ManWomanBoogie" reveals that Q-Tip is on a mission to ÛÛ
ÛÛ create original music as timeless as the tracks he used to ÛÛ
ÛÛ sample once upon a time. It's also obvious that the title ÛÛ
ÛÛ of his latest album is no accident. "The Renaissance is ÛÛ
ÛÛ significant because for some time now people have ÛÛ
ÛÛ questioned the integrity of hip-hop," he reveals. "I feel ÛÛ
ÛÛ like the time is ideal for something that has a ÛÛ
ÛÛ revisionist spirit to it." Taking the same type of ÛÛ
ÛÛ nonconformist risks as Stevie Wonder, John Lennon and the ÛÛ
ÛÛ mavericks of other music genres, Q-Tip has always gone ÛÛ
ÛÛ left when it comes to his position in hip-hop culture. ÛÛ
ÛÛ People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, the ÛÛ
ÛÛ 1990 debut of A Tribe Called Quest, introduced Q-Tip's ÛÛ
ÛÛ iconoclast stance. The 20-year-old emceed about ÛÛ
ÛÛ vegetarianism, French expatriates and domestic violence at ÛÛ
ÛÛ a time when (then as now) other more standard rappers' ÛÛ
ÛÛ topics were marching lockstep in comparison. Yet he always ÛÛ
ÛÛ made absolutely sure to charm the Bonita Applebums and ÛÛ
ÛÛ practice the art of moving butts. The Renaissance goes to ÛÛ
ÛÛ show that the more things change, the more they stay the ÛÛ
ÛÛ same. On "Life Is Better," singer Norah Jones helps Q-Tip ÛÛ
ÛÛ give a unique spin on the hip-hop love song: a love of ÛÛ
ÛÛ hip-hop itself, that is. "The state of hip-hop is in ÛÛ
ÛÛ conception now," he says, discussing the regeneration and ÛÛ
ÛÛ renaissance of the culture. "Something else is happening ÛÛ
ÛÛ to it and there's a new approach, a rebirth that's going ÛÛ
ÛÛ on. One of the many cool things about the digital world is ÛÛ
ÛÛ that it has grown the appetite for good music. Now people ÛÛ
ÛÛ can find an obscure Beatles song or an EPMD remix online, ÛÛ
ÛÛ so everyone is becoming more hip." Q-Tip's love of hip-hop ÛÛ
ÛÛ only rivals his love for the opposite sex, an adoration ÛÛ
ÛÛ that's clear and evident on tracks like "Believe" ÛÛ
ÛÛ featuring D'Angelo, or The Renaissance's first single, ÛÛ
ÛÛ "Gettin' Up": "I like to watch everybody gravitate towards ÛÛ
ÛÛ you/Your magnetic presences make them come through/The ÛÛ
ÛÛ same way you got them, you got me too." Love talk is all ÛÛ
ÛÛ around The Renaissance, but Q-Tip remains as ÛÛ
ÛÛ characteristically diverse as ever. "Fight/Love" with ÛÛ
ÛÛ Raphael Saadiq, for example, alludes to the ever-present ÛÛ
ÛÛ realities of the Iraq War. The sole track handled by a ÛÛ
ÛÛ producer other than Q-Tip himself is "Move," a ÛÛ
ÛÛ hyper-kinetic pastiche of diced-up Jackson 5's "Dancing ÛÛ
ÛÛ Machine" courtesy of the late, great J. Dilla. "A Tribe ÛÛ
ÛÛ Called Quest is no more," says Q-Tip, putting a cap on ÛÛ
ÛÛ rumors sparked by their recent reunion shows on the recent ÛÛ
ÛÛ Rock the Bells Tour. Yet hardcore fans will still recall ÛÛ
ÛÛ J. Dilla's participation in The Ummah, the production team ÛÛ
ÛÛ (also including Q-Tip and DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammad) that ÛÛ
ÛÛ handled full chores on the final two ATCQ albums. "Move" ÛÛ
ÛÛ comes closest to reviving the head-nodding kick of A Tribe ÛÛ
ÛÛ Called Quest, a fitting testament to the funky skills of ÛÛ
ÛÛ James "J. Dilla" Yancey. Q-Tip is in his own extremely ÛÛ
ÛÛ capable hands for the remainder of The Renaissance. Long ÛÛ
ÛÛ known as a grand talent behind recording-studio mixing ÛÛ
ÛÛ boards, Q-Tip has blessed a number of diverse artists with ÛÛ
ÛÛ beats throughout his 20-year career: Nas, Mariah Carey, ÛÛ
ÛÛ Mobb Deep, Whitney Houston. Since his start on the Jungle ÛÛ
ÛÛ Brothers' 1988 "Black Is Black," music fans have waited on ÛÛ
ÛÛ solo Q-Tip in one form or another. His 1999 Amplified ÛÛ
ÛÛ debut album--produced largely by J. Dilla and featuring ÛÛ
ÛÛ the career-defining hip-pop hits "Vivrant Thing" and ÛÛ
ÛÛ "Breathe and Stop"--still left many wondering how Q-Tip ÛÛ
ÛÛ would sound without commercial constraints. His nine-year ÛÛ
ÛÛ time delay (Kamaal the Abstract was recorded but went ÛÛ
ÛÛ unreleased in the interim) may bring to mind other ÛÛ
ÛÛ missing-in-action masters of the hip-hop craft, but Q-Tip ÛÛ
ÛÛ insists it's all good. "There hasn't been a delay," he ÛÛ
ÛÛ says, "and I think I can speak for myself, Lauryn Hill, ÛÛ
ÛÛ Erykah Badu and D'Angelo when I say that we make music ÛÛ
ÛÛ when the spirit is with us. We are a lot who are very ÛÛ
ÛÛ observant as well as introspective. We paint intense, ÛÛ
ÛÛ colorful pictures, so it takes time." Some of that time ÛÛ
ÛÛ has been spent chasing the acting jones Q-Tip established ÛÛ
ÛÛ locking lips with Janet Jackson in director John ÛÛ
ÛÛ Singleton's 1993 Poetic Justice. In films like ÛÛ
ÛÛ Disappearing Acts (2000), Prison Song (2001) and Spike ÛÛ
ÛÛ Lee's She Hate Me (2004), Q-Tip expresses another side of ÛÛ
ÛÛ his renaissance-man persona, holding his own against ÛÛ
ÛÛ actors like Sanaa Lathan and Anthony Mackie. "When I ÛÛ
ÛÛ recorded my first album, I was 19," Q-Tip says. "So I was ÛÛ
ÛÛ very much in the moment and did not think about my career ÛÛ
ÛÛ past the following year. I knew I loved what I did and had ÛÛ
ÛÛ big fun, but I never imagined this." The Renaissance marks ÛÛ
ÛÛ the return of one of the most recognizable voices and ÛÛ
ÛÛ individualist figures in all of hip-hop. At this moment ÛÛ
ÛÛ for change in the hip-hop nation and the nation at large, ÛÛ
ÛÛ The Renaissance could not have come at a more appropriate ÛÛ
ÛÛ moment. Leave it to Q-Tip to be right on time. ÛÛ
ÛÛ ÛÛ
ÛÛ ÛÛ
ÛÛ The album mixes soul beats, piano, guitars, and Q-Tip's ÛÛ
ÛÛ usual thoughtprovoking lyricism, which takes you on a trip ÛÛ
ÛÛ from relationships and summer songs to social issues of ÛÛ
ÛÛ late, and has a kind of '90s feel to it. "The Renaissance" ÛÛ
ÛÛ features Raphael Saadiq, Norah Jones, D'Angelo and Amanda ÛÛ
ÛÛ Diva. ÛÛ
