█ When a band thatÆs touted as being one that ôwill █
█ appeal to fans of Meshuggah, Strapping Young Lad, █
█ Dillinger Escape Plan, Soilwork, Dimmu Borgir and █
█ others,ö and considering theyÆve anointed █
█ themselves as purveyors of ôfilmscore metal █
█ (chug-score)ö, one can be forgiven for allowing █
█ negative preconceived notions to develop toward █
█ Xerath. That said, I is far more satisfying than █
█ such a hodge-podge description might indicate. █
█ Though overindulgent their appetite is, the end █
█ result proves far better than whatÆs generated █
█ from similarly minded acts like Winds of Plague. █
█ █
█ On paper, they just donÆt make sense. Tough guy █
█ vocals bark along to a backdrop of math-metal █
█ chugging and gothic keyboard flourishes, █
█ oftentimes interspersed with nu-metal nuanced █
█ guitar breaks, in what amounts to a molten mess █
█ thatÆs in clear need of refinement. █
█ █
█ Though itÆs true that they have bitten off more █
█ than they can chew, when their penchant for █
█ experimentation hits its mark, the results are █
█ innovative and forward thinking. In █
█ ôConsequences,ö stuttered Meshuggah patterns chug █
█ along while the synthesizer takes on an emotive █
█ Faith No More quality than progressively builds █
█ with tension, the song finally bursting with a █
█ slow groove metal riff that Max Cavalera would █
█ kill for. █
█ █
█ In spite of being excessively ambitious, XerathÆs █
█ adventurous spirit and boldness is commendable. █
█ And considering theyÆve been together less than █
█ two years, I is one hell of a first outing. █
